harrah bellingham

Just after noon, the seven ships of the Second Squadron rounded Commercial Point and set their anchors in Bellingham Bay.  It would be the most northern point of the cruise.  Lieutenant Frank Radley, in charge of the National Guard rendered a salute to the arriving fleet.  The Mayor of Bellingham was on had to extend a formal greeting and a welcoming committee quickly boarded the Connecticut and extended the greeting from the City to the officers and men of the fleet.

Battleship New Jersey in Bellingham Bay - June 1, 1908, "One of the 8 B.Ships that were here May 21, 22, & 23.  We were on board this one and the Connecticut.  They are quite a sight and worth the price of admission.  We live only 12 miles from the bay.  Everything looks good this spring.  Charles Bertmud"

official program for the reception of the atlantic fleet

The community had planned a variety of events for the fleet while they were visiting.  On Thursday there was a baseball game between Connecticut and the Bellingham Northwest League, and dancing for sailors at the White City Pavilion.  Officers were treated to an automobile sight-seeing tour to Marietta and then to Lake Samamish.   In the evening there was a Ball at the Fairland Rink, and at 9 pm, boxing smokers were held at the Cougar Club, Kulshan Club, and Elks Club simultaneously!  On the evening of May 22nd, 1,000 men were able to attend he play at Beck's Theater as guests of the City.  And at 9 pm the same evening, the Officers' Ball at the Fairyland Rink.

sailors aboard the relief

This is an interesting photograph of sailors aboard the hospital ship Relief.  It is canceled during the port visit at Bellingham, Washington.  Possibly the Relief was in Puget Sound during the fleet visit?

The card was mailed by Dona J. Obey, a Seaman on the USS Virginia to his sister Blanche.  "Dear Sister, A bunch a sick sailors aboard the Relief.  What do you think of them.  They are all surgical patients.  A healthy looking crew.  I am get mine this week.  Dona"
