M. R. Battey, USS Missouri – Journey Home

This is a group showing the return to Hampton Roads and of shipboard life taken at different times during the cruise.  The first card shows the arrival of President Roosevelt at the quarterdeck of the ship being greeted by the officers and crew.

There are a couple of cards in this group of photographs that seem to indicate the photographer was onboard the USS Kearsarge.  The photograph below shows a forward gun mount to the left.  This appears to be a circular turret that is stacked above another.  The only ships of this type in the fleet were the Kearsarge and the Kentucky.  All of the other ships had rectangular mounts.  The Missouri, Kearsarge and Kentucky were attached to Second Squadron, Fourth Division under Admiral Seaton Schroeder.  This division split with Missouri and Ohio going to Athens, the Wisconsin, Illinois and Kentucky going to Algeria and Tunisia, and Wisconsin, Kearsarge, and later the Illinois going to Malta.  In essence, this means that photographs were taken in three different places during the same period.  My best guess, Missouri, Kearsarge, and Wisconsin or Kentucky all had people who took photos that were process on the Missouri by the photographer onboard.  That would be why M. R Battey was able to purchase the entire collection.  The last group of photos in this group are from after returning with a ship in the background having a cage mast.

The below group of cards are from the arrival of the ships in Hampton Roads.  The Chamberlin Hotel on Old Point Comfort where the Grand Ballroom was decorated with patriotic bunting when they departed and, I am sure when they returned.

The rest of this group is provided in no particular order.  All of them are interesting.
