M. R. Battey, USS Missouri – Egypt

This unknown photographer took photos at the pyramids of sailor, but he also took pictures of  the desert, individual people, buildings, ancient towns, mosques, and things like locomotive 501 getting water.

The little steam locomotive was probably used for track maintenance, moving cars around the yard, or possibly as a small passenger train between towns.  I was probably built by the British, but I have been unable to determine the origin or make.  I am sure their is a detailed record somewhere.

The fleet's visit started in the city of Suez where a select group of sailor, estimate is 1,000, where allowed to go ashore and ride the train to Cairo and visit the pyramids.  From all accounts, this was without officers, as they could not be spared during the transit of the canal.  The photographer was not part of that group and had to wait until arrival in Cairo to see the sites.  Below are pictures of the transit and arriving in Port Said.

This group of photographs is from his visit to the pyramids and to other sites in the desert around Cairo.  If I had to guess, the gentleman on the donkey is our photographer, who allowed someone to take his photo with his camera.  In the collect there a very few single photos of sailors, this being one of them.  Interesting to note in the collection is a photograph of the sphinx done by Brown & Shiffer who must have found a way to sell there cards to the sailors on all ships.
